[07. May 2010] Exhibition Thorsten Wingenfelder

Who the hell is Thorsten Wingenfelder?

Thorsten Wingenfelder (born 1966 in Hamburg) refers to himself as a musician, photographer and innovator.

The order has not yet moved until today, at least in public perception. ‚There is always Thorsten Wingenfelder also the guitarist and songwriter, solo singer with the imperfect song, the musician’. With his older brother Kai, and three other musicians in 1987, he founded the rock band ‚Fury in the Slaughterhouse’ in Hannover/Germany. The band managed in the following years, one of the most amazing success stories of the German music scene. Their songs Time to wonder, Won’t forget these days, Radio Orchid, Every Generation Got Its Own Disease, etc. have become classics of German rock history. 22 years later and with far more than 4 million copies sold, 2 solo CD's, various awards and countless others worldwide tours, Thorsten Wingenfelder and ‚Fury’ played a very emotional farewell tour with more than 100 000 spectators to leave the big podium.

Just two years earlier - when changes became apparent in the band - Thorsten Wingenfelder discovered his old passion for photography again. The musician trusted his instinct and attempt a re-start. And with amazing intensity and even more astonishing success. ‚In his special field of portrait photography and after a short time the all-rounder set surprising accents’ the German magazine PHOTOGRAPHY wrote in January 2010.

Thorsten Wingenfelder is more of a classic, tries the documentary and the truth of a moment in the meeting with his opposite. And often, in rather imperfection styling, he discovers the strong and the weak in the character's face. Almost everything that can tell complete stories in a 125/sec. And all preferably outside, and preferably black and white. In love and created in the style of 20th century analog portraiture, Wingenfelder creates a bridge between the modern digital and the quietly disappearing analog imagery. This fits to Thorsten Wingenfeld statement in the PHOTOGRAPHY-Magazine: ‚Maybe this is too romantic, but in general I like the photo as a document’.

Maybe he is finally just this: a multi-talented, highly gifted romantic. And perhaps this makes him so valuable to us these days.
