10. The female mussel
The woman: desirable and always exceptionally interesting
Picture information:
89cm x 124cm, oil on canvas
The story:
This picture explicitly reveals for the first time what I have only hinted at in previous paintings: the transformation to femininity. In comparing this motive with the Grand Mussel, it is possible to see the big changes I have made: The abraded extremities are now the size of plates. They form a circle (or a round dance) around the focal point of the picture, the opening to the inner shell. Just as with female characteristics, the viewer cannot know precisely what resides inside. The opening is almost black and nothing can be seen within.
Just a small unprepossessing diagonal wall hints at more: there is so much more to discover. However, the explorer faces a difficult task if he wishes to enter the inner center of the shell. He must first overcome the implied teeth in order to avoid injury. These teeth stand in a manner similar to a group of penguins at the entry edge and are ready to pounce on any intruder. Thus I have visually presented the female characteristics of a woman and hence the title of painting.
