9. Buttons Up
The woman as household manager
Picture information:
89cm x 124cm, oil on canvas
The story: This painting depicts a new variety of shell in warm coloured shades. It is immediately noticeable that its extremities have been altered through erosion by the sea. It is precisely on these striking points that I have positioned the first symbol of female daily household tasks - namely the button. These buttons are a slight distortion of the well-known form and are only recognisable on closer inspection.
Buttons on a shell: what can that mean?
This picture is a reference to the transformation of the shell into femininity. It is not blatant. Only the beginnings are discernable to the viewer. The corresponding message could be: "The truth is valid, regardless of whether or not it is recognised."
