'Beach of My Dreams' or
'To Spite Odysseus'
The title, the idea and the concept for these paintings came to me during a vacation in Greece, on the island of Kos. I was a very committed and frequent business traveler at that time, as I was responsible for the Shoes and Accessories division at PUMA. Tired and drained, I decided I could use a vacation on a sunny beach in southern Europe in order to relax and recharge my batteries. Unfortunately, none of my friends had time to join me, so I packed away my sketching materials and headed off alone to Kos, which is located in the Aegean Sea, near Turkey.
Kos is a true vacation paradise with beautiful beaches, clear waters and a fantastic view of neighboring islands. After arriving at my hotel, which was located directly at the beach, I took a look at my accommodations and the area surrounding them. I immediately felt as if I had arrived in paradise. The word strant is an old Middle Netherlands-German word that originally meant something like "strip of well-being" and which today survives as strand, the German word for beach. The word was originally used to describe the area where solid land and moving water met, a flat coastal strip containing mostly sand or gravel.
